There are four tribes in Populous: The Beginning; all of them are identical in ability.

Each tribe is distinguishable by diffrent color, by a diffrent shaman graphic, and by different building appearences.

Blue Tribe
In terms of coding, the Blue tribe is called the Player tribe as seen in Single Player saved games. In Single Player, this is the tribe that the player takes control of to aid the Blue Shaman on her quest, to destroy her enemies and become a god. Some players incorrectly call this tribe the "Ikani" (a variation on "Dakini"), though even the developers of Populous say it was never given a name.

Dakini
The Dakini are probably the most powerful enemy in Populous, as they are arguably the most militaristic, with a preference of brute force over subversion. When the player fights the Dakini, they have (50% of the time) their camp entirely complete.

Vaults of Knowledge
The Dakini have many powerful and useful Vaults of Knowledge, many of which hold secrets of their militarism. Their Vaults of Knowledge contain tornado, firestorm, Angel of Death, volcano,Warrior Training Hut and Firewarrior Training Hut.

Invasion of the Dakini
When the Dakini attacks, they use a good strike force. They are the most forward and aggressive tribe in the game. On a mission like Archipelago the tribe uses boats for an early, heavy attack. A Dakini attack force typically consists of 4 Preachers, 6 Warriors and 6 to 8 Firewarriors. The Dakini Shaman is the one to be feared most of them all, making use of very powerful spells toward the endgame, notably Firestorm, Angel of Death, and Volcano. Fortunately, they don't launch surprise sneak attacks as often as the Chumara; they are more likely to invade through a predictable direction.

Defensively, the Dakini tends to occupy their Guard Towers along the perimeter with Firewarriors. Just as in their attacks, the Dakini makes more use of Warriors and Firewarriors than Preachers in their defense.

Chumara
The Chumara tribe wear yellow clothes and their Shaman's mask is shaped like a sun. They are generally considered to be the enemy tribe of middle strength. In the level Unlikely Allies, the Chumara Tribe is your ally and the Dakini Tribe is your enemy. On the level, Human Shield the Chumara tribe is allied with the Dakini. You and the Matak Tribe are enemies with each other and enemies with the Dakini-Chumara Alliance. The first level where you will meet the Chumara is Crisis of Faith, where the discovery of the preacher takes place.

The Chumara tribe is popular for being on islands by themselves in Single Player. They are known for their use of preachers as well as some uncommon (by online standards) tactics to achieve victory. In some instances, they can be a more dangerous opponent than the stronger Dakini tribe as a result of reliance on sneak attacks.

They are on a island to themselves in levels:

*7: Unseen Enemy
*9: Fire In The Mist
*11: Treacherous Souls
*13: Aerial Bombardment
*14: Attacked From All Sides
*15: Incarcerated
*18: Head Hunter
*22: Solo
*23: Inferno

Vaults of Knowledge
The Chumara's Vaults of Knowledge contain "tricky" spells and buildings. For spells, their Vaults of Knowledge contain convert, invisibility, hypnotise and Magical Shield. For buildings their Vaults of Knowledge include the temple and Spy Training Hut.

Invasion of the Chumara
Attacks from the Chumara can often be unpredictable and unexpected, and can sometimes prove more devastating than the Dakini, especially if they invade from an unprepared direction. In Level 6: Building Bridges, the Chumara often attacks randomly, and can vary their attacks from the north-west passage or from due north. This unpredictability is also apparent in their use of followers and the Shaman's choices of spells. They make heavy use of Preachers, and later also Spies. In the mid-late levels, their attack forces are often protected by Magical Shield, which makes counter-attacking their attacks harder due to many shielded Preachers. Spies are often sent in random intervals, and can disrupt trooper production if they ignite a Training Hut. The Chumara also makes heavy use of boats and balloons in their attacks, especially the latter. The Chumara Shaman also likes to turn her attacking forces invisible for a surprise attack (which fits into the unpredictability factor), which is first witnessed in Level 7: Unseen Enemy. She also makes handy use of the Hypnotize spell during an attack, turning her enemy's followers against themselves, first seen in Level 11: Treacherous Souls. Towards the endgame, she will not hesitate to drop a devastating spell (Volcano/Earthquake/Firestorm) in the middle of a settlement once she gets through its defenses.

Defensively, the Chumara places Preachers more so than the other followers around their perimeter. Guard Towers on their base's perimeter are usually occupied with either Firewarriors or Preachers. Other Towers within their base are occupied by Spies (who can conceal activity in the base) or the Shaman. The Shaman makes good use of the Hypnotise spell defensively as well.

Matak
The Matak are the green tribe in the game. They are usually the weakest on worlds where all 3 enemy tribes are found.

Invasion of the Matak
The Matak are arguably the most peaceful tribe in the game. If and when they do attack, their attack force is usually on the smaller side, but they can occasionally attack with a big one as well, as can be seen in Level 16: Bloodlust. Their attack force is usually a good balance of Warriors, Preachers, and Firewarriors, and they use Spies very rarely. Their Shaman, however, wields many powerful spells of nature, and should not be taken lightly. She makes good use of Erode (as seen in Level 10: From the Depths and Level 12: An Easy Target) and Earthquake (Level 13: Aerial Bombardment and Level 18: Headhunter). During an attack, she also often uses Swamp to kill defending enemy troops & disable guard towers (ironically, she often manages to kill herself by walking into her own Swamp), and Swarm to have free passage into an enemy settlement. Curiously, on some levels, the Matak tribe seldom attacks, if at all. This can be seen on Level 23: Inferno. On the last level (The Beginning), the Matak uses a "defensive attack" strategy; they build very close to the Blue Tribe's settlement, which can provoke the Matak into "defending" themselves.

Defensively, the Matak tend to build a lot of Towers, and uses a balanced mix of followers in their defense. Of all the tribes, the Matak tends to be the best at defense, using a "Booming" strategy; as they seldom invest in attacking, all their followers are used for defense. See above for the "defensive attack" strategy used in Level 25: The Beginning. A fitting motto for the Matak would in that case be: "Defense is the best attack". The Matak Shaman often uses both Swamp and Swarm to kill or distract enemy invaders.

Vaults of Knowledge
The Matak Vaults of Knowledge include earthy spells and one very important building. For spells their Vaults of Knowledge contain erode, swamp, lightning, swarm, flatten, landbridge, and earthquake. For the building the Vaults of Knowledge contains the Guard Tower.

Demo Tribe Names
In the Demo version of Populous, the tribe names for Yellow and Green were switched such that yellow was called the Matak tribe, and green was called the Chumara Tribe. By placing units of the green tribe into a level played in the demo, users can confirm that the names were indeed switched.
Thomasagrayhttps://wiki.popre.net/index.php?title=Tribes&diff=7895Tribes2023-01-23T08:40:05Z
Thomasagray: /* Dakini */

The Guard Tower is a building which can be placed anywhere on the landscape to give an advance warning of an enemy attack. Any follower placed inside the tower will sound a warning bell whenever an enemy follower approaches. Pressing the space bar will then zoom to the tower. Since the Guard Tower does not need to be constructed next to an existing building, it can also be used to begin a new settlement. Enemy followers (including invisible ones) that are close enough to a guard tower will appear on the minimap.

Because of the height of the tower, any follower placed inside has improved abilities:

* The Shaman, Firewarriors and Preachers have their range increased
* Braves extend the look-out range
* Warriors can call for help, if the player presses B (http://cdplayer.popre.net/strategy/interface.htm)
* Spies can unmask enemy Spies and hide all buildings and followers in their range from worldview

Building the Guard Tower on top of high ground will extend these ranges even further.
Dakini
The Dakini are probably the most powerful enemy in Populous, as they are arguably the most militaristic.

Fortunately, they don't launch surprise sneak attacks as often as the Chumara.

Attacks from the Chumara can often be unpredictable and unexpected.

Thomasagrayhttps://wiki.popre.net/index.php?title=Middle_Ground&diff=7881Middle Ground2022-05-14T04:46:49Z
Thomasagray:

Middle Ground is the 17th level in Populous The Beginning, where the player faces all the 3 tribes. It is the second of the 4 vertical planets. The level introduces the guest spell Armageddon. It is one of the most famous and played online levels as well - in Multiplayer, it goes by the name Pressure Point.
Setting
This level is set up as a large (identical, almost symmetrical) landmass. Each tribe starts with a large chunk of land with three paths leading to other twin settlements. The central paths lead to the central Stone Head that is positioned on top of a hill that looks like a large staircase from all directions. The side paths lead to other enemy bases directly (these can all be accessed from the centre as well). The player's base is positioned on the northwest landmass with the Dakini base to the east, the Matak base to the south and the Chumara base to the southeast. The player must pass by the Stone Head for the most direct path to the Chumara base. All three enemy tribes start off with developed bases but will continue to build more buildings. Blue starts off with a few completed huts as well as all the training huts complete. There are plenty of Wildmen and trees on this map, especially on the paths leading to other areas.

Strategy
To start off, build as many huts as you can early on and convert as many wildmen as possible. Make sure to train at least ten warriors, preachers and firewarriors for defense and consider training some more as the level progresses depending on how much you need them.

Position your trained units to patrol in the southeast portion of your base so that they can run over to any of the three paths to deal with enemy attacks. Your Shaman should be placed in a Guard Tower on the hill overlooking the central path for extended spell range. Later on, you should build a Balloon Hut for her to be transported in and place a firewarrior in her Guard Tower instead. Charge Erode early in order to cut off enemy access by land from all three paths as soon as you can. Do not worry about the Stone Head, no tribe will take control of it long enough to get the spell for a long while. If anyone does, make sure to kill the worshippers before they get the spell.

All enemy tribes will use the paths to attack by land in this level, either to attack an enemy base or to fight over the central Stone Head containing the Armageddon spell. You will be attacked early so make sure you have a defense set up early. The Matak will also build a Boat Hut to attack by boat and the Chumara will build a Balloon Hut to attack by balloon. Make it a priority to get your Shaman in a balloon to fly over and destroy these buildings before the enemy can make use of them. If you do this and also manage to erode the three paths, you can eventually stop the enemy from attacking your base.

Once the enemy are unable to attack you at all, keep working on increasing your population by building as many huts as possible. You can use your Shaman and her devastating spells to destroy the tribes one by one or cut off all access to the central Stone Head with more Erode spells and send some followers to get the Armageddon spell. If you plan to use the Armageddon spell, train all your followers into equal numbers of warriors and firewarriors (preachers and braves aren't very useful here) and cast the spell anywhere. With a large population of these trained units it should be easy to finish the enemy tribes.
Incarcerated is the 15th level in Populous: The Beginning. It introduces the Magical_Prison, where the blue shaman is being held by the Chumara. The player is unable to select the Shaman, being unable to move or cast spells. The level also has a 7:30m timer.
Blue's followers are settled on a small, circular island with a hill in the centre that is covered in trees. The base holds all the training huts, a few regular huts and a boat hut. West of the player's base is a long island where the Chumara are settled. Three firewarriors in Guard Towers protect the east coast. On the coast, many Chumara warriors supported by preachers prevent access to the west. West of the patrollers is the prison that holds the blue Shaman, surrounded by three more Guard Towers with firewarriors. West of the prison is a cliff that overlooks the fully constructed Chumara settlement which is cramped in a small area with a ridge preventing access from all sides but the east.
Strategy
This level can be challenging at first if you do not come up with a quick and effective strategy for liberating the Shaman. The following strategy shows one effective way of doing this.

Send a few braves to build four boats. Meanwhile, train ten warriors and ten preachers. When your boats are finished load your trained units inside so that each boat holds five followers.

Send all boats to land on the eastern shore, ignoring the eastern Guard Towers. Use your preachers and warriors to claim the beach and send your warriors to kill the firewarriors surrounding the prison. Once all this is done destroy the prison and send your Shaman to pray at the Obelisk that appears west of where the prison was.

The Obelisk grants your Shaman a Volcano spell, which you can use from the cliff overlooking the Chumara base to destroy it. Find any remaining followers and eliminate them (without losing your Shaman) and victory will be yours.

Trivia
*There is a small mistake in the in-game starting speech. 'Dakini' should have been 'Chumara'. But it is possible that the Dakini have imprisoned the shaman and left her execution up to the Chumara.
*This is the third level in Populous that has a timed objective.
*This is the only level in Populous to have a prison on it.
Fortress is the tenth level in Undiscovered Worlds, where the player faces the Dakini, who controls a large fortress. The Dakini will not engage in combat until the player attacks or is caught by them. A multiplayer version of this level exists called Fortresses.

Starting Speech
"The Dakini have long kept a mighty stronghold on this world. Currently they are unaware of your presence. Perhaps, it would be wise to keep it that way until you are ready to strike."
Setting
There is a very large island where the player and the Dakini are on. The blue tribe cannot be discovered unless the enemy sees one of the followers. There is a smooth hill North of the player's village. North of it is a small plain which divides both settlements. The Dakini have a very powerful fortress, the walls being steep mountains. At the center of the front of their fort is a large opening from which they attack. Inside the walls is their city. A landbridge going up allows them to go on top of the wall. Behind the wall is a Stone Head. A small island in the middle of the sea bears another Stone Head.

Strategy
As the briefing says, the Dakini won't become aggressive until you get too close to their base or attack them. Since the Dakini won't send scouting parties against you, you should have all the time in the world to build your settlement well away from the enemy fortress. Build various training huts and several huts you can fit within your parcel of land, expand it with Land Bridge if necessary. You can also use that time to charge your spells, volcano will prove devastating when cast at the right moment.

Defence
To stop the Dakini from attacking your city, send your Shaman to the top of the Dakini mountain wall (Note: Mind the firewarriors. Many are inside towers). There's suppose to be a large opening where the Dakini armies start from before attacking. Close it by using the Landbridge or Flatten spell at the edge of the canyon opening. They won't be able to attack now.

*The Angel of Death has a great amount of health points, but can be defeated with damaging spells/firewarrior shots - for instance, firestorm will damage it; an enemy Angel of Death will battle it, and usually, whoever has greater health will destroy the other (else, both will perish). It can also be destroyed by 4 direct lightning stikes or if a large number of firewarriors attack it at once. If it doesn't get destroyed, it usually goes away in 3 - 5 minutes. It is possible for a good part of the tribe to be decimated with a good Angel of Death.

Dakini
The Dakini are probably the most powerful enemy in Populous, as they are perhaps known for their militarism. When the player fights the Dakini, they have (50% of the time) their camp entirely complete.
Fortunately, they don't launch surprise sneak attacks as often as the Chumara.

Attacks from the Chumara can often be unpredictable and unexpected.

Dakini
The Dakini are probably the most powerful enemy in Populous. When the player fights the Dakini, they have (50% of the time) their camp entirely complete.

Vaults of Knowledge
The Dakini have many powerful and useful Vaults of Knowledge.

*9: Fire In The Mist
*11: Treacherous Souls
*13: Aerial Bombardment
