This is the populous wiki's help page. If you need more help on editing the wiki go to a more sifisticated help page like here.

Making an Article

First type the article name in your search box and press go. If the article does not exist you may click create page and start typing.

Editing an Article

If you feel something is not right or you want to add something to an article, go on the article and press the edit tab at the top. Main pages like About or the Main Page can not be edited by standard users. If you think they should be changed, contact a SysOp.

What can be in the Article

These things can be in any of the articles:

  • Strategys
  • Hints & Tips

Articles can be about:

  • A Game Object
  • A Level
  • A Phrase
  • A Populous Program or Game
  • Editing/Modifing Populous
  • Keep articles about people in the user pages. ( [[user:TedTycoon|TedTycoon]] )

Must not Include

These things are not allowed in articles:

  • Abuse
  • Things not related with Populous.
  • Yourself in 1st person (apart from user pages)
  • Your Comments/Ideas/Suggestions

Wiki Formatting

Some of the common formatting can be applied using the buttons at the top of editing page. For Example, Bold, Italic, Wiki Link, External Link, Level 2 Headline, Image. For more information about formatting text see Wiki Markup.

Interwiki links:

Example Source
Warrior [[Warrior]]
Warriors [[Warrior]]s
Useful Follower [[Warrior|Useful Follower]]

External links:

Example Source Notes
[1] [http://populous.strategyplanet.gamespy.com] External link without description will be automatically shown as [#]. Make sure you include 'http://'.

Formatting

Example Source
Bold text '''Bold text'''
Italic text ''Italic text''
Mixed text '''''Mixed text'''''

Headings

Headings help people navigate through the page easier. If four or more headings are used in a page you will get a Contents box before the first heading on the page.

To use headings you use a certain amount of ('=')s. To do a standard heading use two '='. Then a sub heading would be three '=' and you can keep getting smaller.

==Heading 1==

Lists

  • * - 1st Level Bullet
    • ** - 2nd Level Bullet
  1. # - Numbered
  2. # - Lists

Other Formatting

Example Source
==No Format== <nowiki>/<nowiki>
Strike-through text <s>Strike-through text</s>
Superscript Superscript
Subscript text Subscript text
Small text <small>Small text</small>
<!-- Hidden Comment -->
Dotted Frame
<pre>Dotted Frame</pre>

Images

You can add a centred image by putting

[[Image:Firewarrior.png|left|thumb|100px|image caption]]

in the edited text. Save the page, then click the link to upload the image. For more information, see Picture tutorial.

Templates

A template is a piece of code that can be copied simply onto any page. They may have parameters that you can change. For example every follower uses the follower template, it sets each prameter to information about the follower your reading about.

If you look at the template it will give you usage instructions. To create your own template enter

'http://www.tedtycoon.co.uk/populous/wiki/index.php?title=Template:'

in the url and change the name of the template. For example :

'http://www.tedtycoon.co.uk/populous/wiki/index.php?title=Template:Example'

.

Redirect Pages

Redirecting pages is good for when people search for pages. To help the search find more pages you can add pages that have a similar name for example Map Editing could be a redirect page to Map Making. If there are broken links that are meant to be pointing to a diffrent page it is better just to fix the link rather than make a redirect page. Just type Redirect and then the page name.

#redirect [[Help:Contents]]

Categories

Adding a category link to the page adds the page to that category list. Make sure templates that you have used on the page do not already link to a category you were going to write.

What makes a good Article

  • When making an article remember not to include yourself as first person. This means do not put I. You must not post opinions or use the Wiki to have arguments, but there is room to describe various developments and the approaches taken by their developers if you wish.
  • Link all the keywords to their articles. Example if you include Firewarrior in one of your articles you can put
    [[Firewarrior]]
    so that it links to that article. If you want to put Firewarriors, you use
    [[Firewarrior]]s or [[Firewarrior|Firewarriors]]

What Shall I Make?

Good ideas can be anything to do with Populous. You can write an article about any object, strategy, online thing or phrase, just make sure you have enough to write about it. We are not trying to remake the Populous Help, but add useful tips and strategies. People can submit Wanted Pages to give page creators ideas.

User Pages

You can also create your own user pages if you are mentioned in the articles. To link a user's name in an article use:

[[user:TedTycoon|TedTycoon]]

Sandbox

The Sandbox page is a page for testing or learning how to write articles. Try it out and do anything you want with it.

Requests and Notes

Use these clever templates on a page.

If you are adding a note then use the note template. {{note|text goes here}}

If a page needs expanding use this template. {{expand|expand what?}}
